How Can Artists Overcome Creative Blocks and Stay Inspired?

Do you find yourself falling into periods of time when your creativity is blocked? What do you do to get out of it?

I recently wrote a restorative meditation for my upcoming membership & courses that you will be able to download as part of the courses and save it to listen to each time you are in need of unblocking a creative block.

Writing the meditation got me thinking about blocks and where they come from. They can come from a plethora of places but I find that many blocks come from being overwhelmed. Whether you're overwhelmed by your own thoughts or the demands and stresses in your life, overwhelm is a huge factor when trying to be creative. When we're overwhelmed it can feel like we have to force creativity to happen rather than having it naturally flow out of us.

There is a quote that reads:

You should sit in nature for 20 minutes... unless you are busy, then you should sit for an hour.

I find that creativity is the same way. We should practice being creative at least 20 minutes per day and when we find ourselves to be too busy or overwhelmed, that is when we need an entire hour per day to make sure that we are connecting with our creative spirit. What are some things you could do to be creative every day for 20 minutes? Could you draw, or write, or paint? What is something you've been wanting to be more creative with recently? Maybe you've been dreaming of working in collage more, learning to crochet, or even cake decorating. Is there a way to incorporate that desire into your everyday life?

I recommend choosing a mode of creativity and then setting yourself up for success. If you want to work on collage, create a kit. Fill a box with a couple of magazines, some canvases or paper to create your collage on, glue sticks, scissors, and some markers or paint if you want to add your own artistic marks to the collage. This way, when it's time to get creative each day, you grab your kit, head to a cleared-off surface – or swipe one clear if needed, in hilarious dramatic fashion if necessary – and get to work. You can set a timer if you need to steer clear of distractions. Let your family know that while the timer is running, you won't be available, you'll be letting your creative muse flow through you. Better yet, add some headphones and music to the equation so you're family has a visual clue that you are in the zone.

If you create a habit of having a daily creative practice, you'll find yourself becoming creative in all areas of your life. You'll have more creative solutions at work, in the way you take care of your chores and duties at home, and even in problem-solving. You'll also find that giving yourself that delicious 20 minutes every day will make you feel more happy, more satisfied, and more joyful. Giving yourself the time to do something pleasurable every single day is a way to reconnect with yourself and disconnect from things that don't matter so much.

What practice will you begin for your 20 minutes – or dare I say your hour – per day? I'd love to hear in the comments.

Currently, my creative hour each day is filled with learning and creating AI art and videos. I'm fascinated by the idea that I can create characters and scenes and edit them together to tell a story. I also know these skills will definitely come into the courses I'm building as well. I've already got a handful of ways that AI will help your art business – and no, they aren't just making images. They are thoughtful and creative ways to do things that you might not have been able to do before without the assistance of AI and I can't wait to share them with you.

Until then, keep up the creativity and please share with me how it's going along the way. I would love to hear!

Hugs and kisses from Blume Bauer at The Yellow Studio
